On 23 April 2018, CNVP Albania’s office in Kukes raised environmental awareness with students of Golaj high school, a pilot village in Hasi Municipality where the Sida-funded project Forests for Local Economic Development is being implemented by CNVP. The focus of the event was on Fierza Lake in Kukes Region which is covered by plastic waste. Although minor attempts have been made to overcome the problem, the lake continues to be polluted at an alarming rate.

Held within the framework of World Earth Day, (the 2018 theme being Stop plastic pollution), the event drew attention to the importance of individual and collective actions toward the environment, particularly people’s responsibility to Reduce plastic use, Clean the surrounding environment, and Recycle used resources.

20 students from Golaj high school prepared different posters for World Earth Day, and prepared a presentation that emphasised both the importance of protecting the environment and actions that can be taken. The students were provided with gloves and waste bags, with a view to cleaning the lake and depositing waste in rubbish bins. Other students happily joined in the lake cleaning activities.
