Working in cooperation with World Vision and MEDIFLOR association, CNVP Albania’s Diber office has supported the establishment of producer groups dealing with non-timber forest products (NTFPs), including the cultivation and harvesting of aromatic and medicinal herbs. This has led to increased income and employment opportunities, as well as the improved management of natural resources.

The first step was to find possible buyers inside/outside Albania. CNVP agreed to cooperate with Agroproduct in Kosovo, subject to cultivation using certified seedlings. Work started with 10 farmers on land fulfilling conditions for the cultivation of medicinal and aromatic herbs. Three varieties were selected - Calendula officinal, Malva Silvestris and Cianys. Prior to delivery of the seedlings, training was given on soil preparation, treatment of seedlings before, during and after planting, as well as harvesting methods and post- harvest care. Cultivation started on a small scale, in order to manage the risk of major losses.

At the beginning of 2018, the number of farmers had increased to 28 farmers, with the cultivated area expanding from 5,000 m2 in 2017 to 13,500 m2 (with 5 farmers cultivating 5,000 m2). Primula was added as a fourth variety. Two businesses have agreed to buy the production with minimum and maximum prices agreed in advance.

This work was supported by CNVP Albania under the framework of the Sida-funded project Forests for Local Economic Development (FLED).
