Strengthening Integrated Forest Management and Reforestation Practices in Erosion-Prone Areas in Debar, North Macedonia

On 14–15 July, CNVP Skopje successfully organized a two-day regional workshop in Debar, North Macedonia, dedicated to integrated forest resource management, afforestation of erosion-prone areas, and the restoration of degraded forest ecosystems. The activity was implemented within the framework of the regional project “Integrated Forest Management along the Drin River Basin.”

The workshop brought together forestry engineers, experts, and practitioners from the region, providing an opportunity to enhance their knowledge through the exchange of expertise, application of modern methodologies, and discussions on challenges and opportunities related to sustainable forest management. Through presentations, technical discussions, and experience-sharing sessions, participants explored approaches for improving forest conditions and effectively rehabilitating areas affected by erosion.

The main objective of the event was to strengthen understanding of the importance of integrated forest management and the application of nature-based solutions for soil protection, restoration of degraded areas, and increasing the resilience of forest ecosystems to climate change. Participants discussed practical measures and good practices that can contribute to biodiversity conservation and the sustainable use of natural resources.

The first day of the workshop focused on two thematic areas:

Workshop 1: Integrated Forest Management as an Approach to Improving the Condition of Forest Ecosystems.
Workshop 2: Approaches and Practices for Afforestation of Erosion-Prone Areas.

During the second day, participants focused on technical solutions and practical aspects related to forest restoration and erosion reduction through the following sessions:

Workshop 3: Selection and Application of Appropriate Plant Species for Successful Anti-Erosion Afforestation.
Workshop 4: Preventive and Corrective Measures for Erosion Management and Soil Protection.

The workshop provided an opportunity to connect experts from different countries, exchange knowledge, and promote innovative solutions for sustainable forest management. Through joint efforts and regional cooperation, the activity contributes to improved protection, restoration, and long-term management of forest ecosystems throughout the Drin River Basin.

The project “Integrated Forest Management along the Drin River Basin” is implemented by CNVP Skopje in cooperation with CNVP Albania, CNVP Montenegro, and CNVP Kosovo, in partnership with ICEP – Association for Global Development, with financial support from the Austrian Development Agency (ADA).
