World Earth Day, 2019
World Earth Day is celebrated annually on 22 April. Events are held worldwide to support the environment, as well as to raise awareness about environmental protection and the need to take care of Man’s fragile planet.
The first World Earth Day on 22 April 1970 saw the birth of the modern environmental protection movement. More than one billion people globally now take part in activities on this day, making it the world's most widely observed secular, non-religious event.
The slogan of World Earth Day 2019 is Protect Our Species, the goals of which are to:
- raise awareness about the accelerating rate of extinction of millions of species, and the causes and consequences of this phenomenon;
- achieve major policy successes that will protect broad groups of species and individual species, as well as their habitats;
- build and activate a global movement that embraces nature and its values; and
- encourage individual actions such as adopting a plant-based diet, as well as stopping the use of pesticides and herbicides.
