CNVP SSPDF project continues to support chestnuts forestry owners
CNVP Kosovo has continued with the implementation of silvicultural interventions by applying different models, contributing to the improvement of the management of chestnut forests. The implementation of these interventions is seen as encouragement of the community to follow the work on chestnut recovery and also on the establishment of demonstration plots with chestnut trees through various agroforestry methods.
During 4-5 of March 2021, based on recommendations given from the regional working group which is composed of key actors of the sector, local experts, and the SSPDF team, experimental parcels were set up within the selected forest area in the Municipality of Gjakova and Peja by applying different alternative methods of treatment and fight against the disease. Methods applied during the intervention were:
- Scaling,
- Thinning,
- Cuttings,
- Filling the surfaces with new chestnut seedlings etc.
Wood biomass obtained from the interventions was recommended to be collected within the forest plots and withdrawn in order to prevent the spread of phytopathogens.
These interventions show that good practices on chestnut forestry contribute to improving the health status and production as well as the opportunity to revert chestnut cultivation into profitable agroforestry business for income generation of the community.
The activity is supported by the Sida-funded project being implemented by CNVP Kosovo - Strengthening Sustainable Private and Decentralized Forestry (SSPDF).
