In its continuous efforts for enhancing the cooperation and exchange knowledge regarding biomass production for renewable energy, CNVP recently organized a two-day study visit with its Kosovo partners in Vienna, Austria. The event, held between June 1st and 2nd, 2023, brought together key stakeholders including the mayors of Shtime, Kacanik, and Hani I Elezit Municipality, representatives from the Ministry of Economy, the Kosovo Fund for Energy Efficiency, and the Association of Kosovo Municipalities. This visit was organised in the framework of Sida-funded SUNREED project.

Meetings were held  with the Austrian Biomass Association to discuss about bioenergy, EU regulations and policies that support wood biomass production and how forest owners are included in the market for sealing roundwood and wood chips, how use of renewable energy  can reduce the carbon sequestration.

The study visit provided a valuable opportunity for the Kosovo delegation to gain insights into the sustainable use of wood for biomass production. By observing the diverse range of services and functions carried out by Austrian institutions and local stakeholders, the group expanded their knowledge base. Subsequent meetings and field visits allowed participants to witness first-hand how the Forest Association of Styria and the Projection Company for Renewable Energy (AsteEnergy) successfully organize the wood chips supply market for biomass district heating systems.

Throughout the visit it became clear that the potential for the use of wood biomass as a sustainable source of energy in Kosovo exists, hence the experiences presented by the expert hosts as well as discussions and ideas among the group, emphasized the need for taking actions such as policies and measures that promote the growth and adoption of wood biomass heating systems in level of municipalities.

The visit also encouraged dialogue and collaboration between the participants and Austrian counterparts by strengthening these connections and being able to establish potential partnerships for future initiatives focused on renewable energy in Kosovo.

Through its project, CNVP aims to facilitate capacity building activities, launch awareness campaigns, and share success stories to inspire and empower municipalities to promote wood biomass heating systems. By establishing a robust policy framework that supports the implementation and expansion of biomass-based heating systems, not only will greenhouse gas emissions be reduced, and dependence on fossil fuels diminished, but local economies will also be stimulated. Additionally, the increased adoption of wood biomass will create employment opportunities and enhance energy security in the region.
