In an effort to promote the cultural and economic significance of chestnuts, the Municipality of Junik joined hands with CNVP Kosovo, within the framework of the SUNREED project, to organize the "Chestnut Day" on October 24, 2023, in the heart of Junik.

The event, which drew residents and visitors alike, showcased a diverse array of activities aimed at celebrating this cherished tree and its products. Among the highlights were an enchanting artistic program featuring local music and traditional dance, creating an atmosphere that showcased the cultural richness of the region.

A fair of local products further marked the importance of community and sustainability, with an array of handmade crafts and organic products on display, visitors had the opportunity to engage directly with producers, fostering a deeper connection between consumers and the vibrant local economy.

The visitors and residents alike were treated to lunch featuring a spread of traditional delicacies. The star of the menu was undoubtedly the freshly roasted chestnuts, an homage to the region's rich agricultural heritage.

Under the SUNREED project, an innovative market system development approach was employed to rejuvenate chestnut cultivation. This initiative aimed to bolster the chestnut market while concurrently benefiting private forest owners and local businesses. The project's approach seeks to strike a balance between economic development and environmental preservation.

The celebration of “Chestnut Day” not only showcases the cultural significance of chestnuts but also lays the foundation for a thriving and interconnected local economy.
