Workshop Recap: Introduction to the Concept of Natura 2000 Protected Areas
We are pleased to share highlights from today’s workshop on Natura 2000, which focused on its important connection with forest ecosystems and Kosovo's national network of protected areas.
The event brought together key stakeholders from relevant ministries and institutions across Kosovo to discuss the importance of Natura 2000 in conservation efforts. It also highlighted the significant role of the network in protecting forests and biodiversity, as well as the next steps in advancing this crucial initiative. Additionally, we examined the potential role of the private forestry sector in identifying priority conservation areas.
Several potential areas for Natura 2000 designation have been identified, including strict nature reserves, national parks, protected bird areas, and wetlands. These areas are vital for preserving Kosovo's natural heritage and will play a key role in the development of the Natura 2000 network, which seeks to ensure the long-term conservation of critical habitats and species.
To support the implementation of Natura 2000 a series of proposed activities and next steps have been outlined. These include strengthening administrative capacities to enforce Natura 2000 policies, offering training programs for private forest owners and associations of private forest owners, public institutions, academia, and civil society, and conducting thorough site assessments to identify priority conservation areas.
We look forward to continuing our joint efforts to protect and preserve Kosovo’s biodiversity for future generations.
