Last week, CNVP Kosovo was pleased to host the Sustainable Use of Forest Residues for Green Energy roundtable, where we gathered experts, stakeholders, and key players from Kosovo's forestry and renewable energy sectors to discuss the future of wood biomass.
This initiative is part of CNVP’s Sustainable Use of Natural Resources for Environment and Economic Development (SUNREED) project, funded by the Swedish Embassy in Prishtina (Sida).
During the event, we shared insights from the Roadmap on Wood Biomass Production, Market and Use in Kosovo, and showcased successful interventions already making a difference in the sector.
Key representatives from the Kosovo Ministry of Agriculture, Ministry of Economy, and the District Heating System of Gjakova expressed strong support for the biomass sector, emphasizing the need for both sustainable forest management and long-term policy reforms.
Here are the key conclusions to explore as we move forward:

--> Potential of Kosovo Forests for Wood Chip Production

• Kosovo’s forests have significant potential to provide sustainable wood chips for green energy.
• A detailed analysis of existing resources and agricultural products will help maximize their use.
• Fast-growing plant plantations also offer additional biomass production opportunities.
--> Promoting Biomass and Raising Public Awareness
• Investment in biomass heating systems (e.g., wood chips) must be supported by awareness campaigns to highlight the environmental and economic benefits.
• Educating the public on replacing traditional energy sources with renewable options is critical to drive change.
--> Silvicultural Interventions to Improve Forest Conditions
• Silvicultural measures to enhance forest quality will provide a sustainable biomass source while improving biodiversity.
--> Subsidy Schemes for the Private Sector
• Designing subsidy schemes to encourage investments in biomass production and use is key to developing a robust biomass market.
• It’s essential to ensure a reliable biomass supply for the Gjakova district heating plant and other local systems.
--> Modern Technologies for Biomass Production
• Advanced technologies can boost biomass production efficiency and quality.
• Training local operators on these technologies is important for success.
--> Ensuring Sustainability
• A comprehensive approach combining natural resources, modern technologies, and supportive policies will ensure the long-term sustainability of biomass as a green energy source.
• Active participation from all stakeholders - public institutions, the private sector, and local communities - is crucial for success.

CNVP Kosovo is committed to continue working towards a sustainable biomass market and a renewable energy future for Kosovo!
