Erosion Control in Puka, Albania: A Milestone for Sustainable Land Management
Erosion Control in Korthpulë: A Milestone for Sustainable Land Management
The Drin River Basin, a vital ecosystem for Albania, faces ongoing challenges from soil erosion, deforestation, and decades of insufficient investment. These threats not only disrupt ecosystems but also severely impact local livelihoods. Addressing the urgent issue of habitat degradation and soil erosion, CNVP Foundation has taken significant steps to safeguard the region’s natural resources through innovative erosion-control measures in Korthpulë. Innovative Solutions for Erosion Control To combat the high rates of soil erosion in Korthpulë, CNVP has successfully implemented a combination of biological and engineering measures, including: Double fences constructed from sustainable wooden materials Dams with dry stone walls, reinforced by concrete belts These measures regulate sediment flow, manage smaller water catchments, and improve the overall health of the ecosystem.
By reducing sediment load, the interventions contribute to a more sustainable and resilient environment. Scientific Monitoring: Data-Driven Solutions Partnering with the Faculty of Civil Engineering, CNVP is conducting in-depth studies to monitor and evaluate erosion and sedimentation rates, especially during the rainy season.
Using advanced tools and techniques, a team of experts is gathering precise data to guide future restoration efforts and ensure the long-term success of these initiatives. Empowering Communities and Building Capacity The success of this project is grounded in the involvement of local stakeholders, including Puka Municipality and Qerret’s Forest & Pasture Association. These collaborations not only ensure the replication of these methods in other areas but also empower local communities. Through employment in afforestation and erosion-control activities, individuals gained income and valuable hands-on experience in Integrated Forest Management (IFM) techniques, equipping them to contribute to future sustainable land management efforts. A Sustainable Vision for the Drin River Basin The “Integrated Forest Management along the Transboundary Drin River Basin” project represents a comprehensive approach to tackling climate change and promoting ecological sustainability. Its impacts include: Reduced soil erosion and improved biodiversity Increased biomass production and carbon sequestration Enhanced water quality for ecosystems and downstream communities By fostering collaboration among local and national stakeholders, the project aims to influence attitudes, encourage sustainable practices, and promote accountability in managing Albania’s natural resources.
A Joint Effort for a Sustainable Future These actions are part of the “Integrated Forest Management along the Drin River Basin” project, funded by the Austrian Development Agency and initiated by ICEP - Austrian development organization. CNVP Foundation proudly leads the implementation of this initiative, working hand in hand with communities and institutions to create a sustainable future for the Drin River Basin and the people who depend on it. Together, we’re ensuring that ecosystems thrive, livelihoods flourish, and the region’s natural beauty is preserved for generations to come.
