On the slopes of the Mavrovo National Park in North Macedonia lies picturesque village of Trebište, which in the past year has become recognized for its local business "Gostilica Samet." This business managed to produce the first certified mountain tea from the Mavrovo region. The project is awarded grant under the project "Sustainable Use of Natural Resources of Shar, Korab-Koritnik, and the Albanian Alps" implemented by CNVP and financially supported by PONT.

On a 1000 m² plot, the couple Samet and Anife, together with other individual farmers, succeeded in planting 6000 roots of mountain tea (Sideritis Scardica), a species that is on the Red List of endangered species in North Macedonia. This tea has deep cultural significance in the region, with a long tradition of harvesting and consumption. Unfortunately, in the past, uncontrolled and improper harvesting practices led to its drastic decline.

Despite the challenges posed by unpredictable weather conditions, Samet and Anife managed to develop seed material and successfully plant the tea. As part of the project, a drip irrigation system was purchased, which allowed precise water dosing for the plants, a crucial factor for their growth and success. Additionally, specialized equipment for drying the tea was acquired, allowing these farmers to properly dry the harvested tea and prepare it for sale.

Project Results:

  • Biodiversity Protection: The successful cultivation of Sideritis Scardica at lower altitudes helps protect the biodiversity and nature of the region.
  • First Certified Organic Tea: The mountain tea from Trebište became the first certified organic tea from the Mavrovo region in North Macedonia.
  • Support for the Local Community: The project strengthened the socio-economic position of the local population, as all of the produced tea was successfully sold, generating additional financial resources.
  • Encouragement for Other Producers: This project encouraged other producers to get involved in cultivating mountain tea, as well as other medicinal and aromatic plants from the Red List of endangered species.

Samet and Anife continue to produce seed material for mountain tea, not only for their own needs but also for the needs of other producers in the region. Their successful story is a great example of how nature can be preserved while simultaneously generating new sources of income through the cultivation of medicinal and aromatic herbs.

This story serves as an inspiration and encouragement for others to get involved in protecting nature, while utilizing the potential of their nature resources.
