Modernizing Beekeeping in Kosovo
Our beneficiary Genc Cakaj BI from Komoran, Drenas, has received modern wood processing equipment through CNVP’s SUNREED project.
From starting with just 5 beehives in 2012 to becoming a key producer of beekeeping equipment, Genc Cakaj BI is now taking a huge step forward: launching the first modern production line in Kosovo for beehive frames.
By promoting the use of lower-grade wood for beekeeping products instead of firewood, and planting fast-growing black locust trees, this aims to:
- Provide farmers with new income opportunities
- Strengthen collaboration with Private Forest Owners (PFOs)
- Ensure access to sustainable wood resources for beekeeping
- Support healthier ecosystems for bees and pollination
Kosovo currently imports around 500,000 beehive frames annually, while demand continues to grow with over 7,500 beekeepers managing 200,000+ beehives. This investment for local production will not only reduce import dependecy but also create jobs and open new export opportunities to neighboring Albania and Greece.
This initiative is part of the SUNREED project, implemented by CNVP Kosovo and financed by the Embassy of Sweden in Pristina (Sida).
