Youth Voices in Environmental Decision-Making
Promoting inclusive decision-making and empowering youth are key objectives of the International Land Coalition (ILC). As a member and focal point of the Kosovo National Land Coalition (NLC), CNVP Kosovo organized a Youth Workshop this week in Prishtina, titled "Strengthening the Capacities and Role of Youth in Active Decision-Making Processes within National Policies on Forests, Biodiversity, and Climate Change."
The event brought together 20 young people from across Kosovo to explore how youth can take a more active role in the ILC’s activities and contribute meaningfully to national decision-making in the fields of forestry, biodiversity, and climate change. The workshop had the support of the Ministry of Environment and Spatial Planning and this collaboration will continue to strengthen youth engagement and participation in future initiatives.
Together, participants discussed the findings of a recent CNVP study on the capacity-building needs of youth in these areas. The study highlighted key gaps where young people seek more knowledge, tools, and opportunities to participate in shaping environmental policies and actions.
Participants were divided into three working groups to analyze and prioritize proposed activities for the NLC Youth Work Plan. They ranked the activities from the most important to the least important, while also determining the level of implementation and defining the timeframe for each. This hands-on approach had participants engage critically and collaboratively in shaping future youth-led environmental actions.
From these group discussions, three main priorities were identified:
- Creation and promotion of digital forums and platforms for learning and collaboration among youth groups in the EMENA region, helping them network with youth organizations and strengthen cooperation in climate change and biodiversity.
- Support for young people, especially students, in accessing practical work experience (such as internships and exchange programs) within central and local institutions, businesses, NGOs, and other environmental and climate-focused organizations.
- Organization of creative and innovative activities that encourage youth to develop green ideas and carry out projects, with access to essential tools such as laptops, cameras, and other equipment.
This workshop is part of CNVP's ongoing commitment to empower young people through the National Land Coalition (NLC), ensuring that youth are not only participants but also key actors in addressing climate change and protecting Kosovo’s natural resources.
