CNVP Kosovo, as part of the Integrated Forest Management along the Drin River Basin project funded by the Austrian Development Agency (ADA) and ICEP, has implemented two key interventions aimed at improving forest conditions in the Dragash region: selective thinning of beech forests and innovative afforestation practices.

During this workshop, the full intervention processes were presented, showcasing practical and replicable models for sustainable forest management and long-term development of forest resources.

The representatives from the Kosovo Forestry Agency, Regional Directorates of Forestry in Prizren and Peja, the Municipality of Dragash, the NAPFOs, APFOs, local experts, all joined the event to observe and discuss the complete rehabilitation process of the beech forest and the afforestation activities.

Selective Thinning of Beech Forests – Zaplluxhe (FMU “Opoja”)

Selective thinning was carried out on 5 hectares of beech forest in Zaplluxhe (FMU “Opoja”) to improve forest structure, support dominant trees, and create space for future growth. The intervention enhanced forest health and climate resilience, provided firewood for the community, increased awareness through practical training, encouraged local participation, and served as a replicable demonstration model.

Innovative Afforestation Practices (FMU “Bredhiku”)

In Vranisht (FMU “Bredhiku”), 5 hectares were afforested using three tree species (Pseudotsuga menziesii, Picea abies, and Quercus petraea) and a mix of traditional and innovative planting methods. The work included: a) soil analysis; b) three planting methods applied - standard pits, spiral machine pits, land preparation: c) shelter tubes for seedling protection. The effort also strengthened awareness through practical and professional training sessions.

Both interventions provided practical training that improved technical skills and boosted community awareness of sustainable forest management. Overall, they enhanced ecosystems, strengthened forest resilience, and empowered local communities across the Drin River Basin.
