From woodchips to furniture to beehives — how is Kosovo building a green economy? The Embassy of Sweden in Prishtina got a firsthand look during a visit to SUNREED project partners.

In Viti, NTSH Dardani demonstrated how sustainable forest management and biomass collection can turn underutilized wood residues into a source of renewable energy and create new business opportunities in the local forest sector.

In Ferizaj, PromoPlast showcased its vision to reduce dependency on imported raw materials by investing in local sawmilling and biomass-based heating. They are turning domestic timber into higher-value furniture products while improving while improving energy efficiency. This circular use of wood residues benefits both the environment and the local economy.

In Komoran, Genc Cakaj BI (BeePro) presented its locally produced beehive frames, an important step toward reducing imports and supporting Kosovo’s growing beekeeping sector. Their production reduces reliance on imports, ensures high-quality frames for beekeepers, and strengthens local value chains. They support sustainable livelihoods for hundreds of local beekeepers while promoting environmentally friendly practices.

These partnerships show how targeted support, innovation, and working together can elevate local resources into grown, new market opportunities and stronger rural communities.

We are grateful to the Embassy of Sweden in Pristina for their continued support in driving green transition and sustainable economic development in Kosovo.

The SUNREED project is implemented by CNVP Kosovo and funded by the Embassy of Sweden in Pristina (Sida).
