CNVP Albania completes afforestation under IFM
The landscape in the hills of Ana e Malit, Vau i Dejës and Pukë is visibly changing. Areas once affected by erosion, dry soil and fire risk are now covered with young trees. Across 22 hectares, 48,565 seedlings have been planted through CNVP Albania’s work under the Integrated Forest Management Along Drin River Basin (IFM) project.
This afforestation activity followed a different approach from traditional models. Instead of focusing mainly on conifer species, the team assessed what the land could naturally support. Native trees, more resistant to drought, heat and fire, were selected to match the Mediterranean character of the area.
Chestnut, walnut, olive, oak, cypress, laurel, poplar, willow and other species were planted together to create a more diverse and resilient forest structure. This diversity will help the soil recover, reduce erosion and strengthen the area against climate-related risks over time.
The intervention was carried out in close cooperation with the National Forest Agency, the Forest Faculty, the municipalities of the area and local environmental NGOs. Local actors were involved in both planning and field implementation, ensuring that the choices made respond to environmental conditions and community priorities.
In some plots, community members suggested planting chestnut trees. This proposal was integrated into the plan, as it fits the land conditions and offers future income opportunities for local families.
The new forests are expected to provide multiple benefits. They will protect the soil, improve ground and surface water management, support beekeeping through flowering species and create shelter and food for wildlife. In the long term, they will also provide fruits, timber and other forest products that communities can use.
Through this approach, CNVP demonstrates how environmental restoration can also support local livelihoods. The work carried out today creates immediate employment while building long-term value for the land and the people who depend on it.
The trees planted under this activity will continue to grow and serve the area well beyond the project timeframe.
This activity is part of the project "Integrated Forest Management Along Drin River Basin (IFM)" funded by ADA as part of International Partnerships Austria, initiated by ICEP - Association for Global Development and implemented by CNVP Foundation in Albania.
