CNVP Kosovo visited Albania during 24-26 May 2018 to review fast growing tree species that are being used for the wood industry and biomass production. Study visit participants included staff of Kosovo’s Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Rural Development (MAFRD) (Department of Forestry, Managing Authority/Department for Rural Development Policy, and Department of Forestry), Kosovo Forest Agency, National Association of Private Forestry Owners, University of Applied Sciences, and the owner of a pellet production company.

Meetings were held with representatives of Albania’s Ministry of Tourism and Environment (Directorate of Forests and Pastures), and the wood pellet company Arditpellets in Korce. Poplar plantation sites were visited, (this species being used as wood biomass for energy and industrial processing).

Topics discussed covered forest legislation and reform, forestry management and best practices for fast growing tree species, and renewable energy. A cooperation partnership between Albania and Kosovo was developed concerning policy/strategy for sustainable forest management, covering fast growing tree species, renewable energy, rural development, field demonstrations, and innovation.

A factory for honey production (Morava) and rural tourism in forestry areas were also visited during the study trip which was supported through the SIDA-funded project Strengthening Sustainable Private and Decentralized Forestry that is being implemented by CNVP Kosovo.
