Each year, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) celebrates World Maritime Day (WMD) to focus attention on the importance of shipping safety, maritime security and the marine environment.

As 2018 marks 70 years of the IMO, the theme for this year’s WMD is IMO 70: Our Heritage – Better Shipping for a Better Future

CNVP is a leading international civil society organisation that is active in all six Balkan countries. It uses evidence-based analysis to improve the sustainable livelihoods of rural communities affected by the ongoing process of environmental and climate change. It intervenes to build a greener economic environment and control the unsustainable exploitation of natural resources.

CNVP is concerned with zonal coast management in the Adriatic. Relevant issues concern:

  • environmentally appropriate tourism infrastructure (including protection of cultural heritage);
  • protection of wetlands and other valuable habitats (including estuarine and coastal water quality);
  • management of coastal lands subject to natural hazards;
  • management of living marine resources on a sustainable basis;
  • protection of endangered species and biodiversity;
  • remediation of hazardous sites; and
  • solid waste management in marine areas.

CNVP wishes to build relationships with CSOs that are active in the Balkans, the European Neighbourhood Space, the Black Sea area and Turkey with which it can cooperate to improve coastal zone and maritime management.
