Opportunities for farm diversification in the circular bioeconomy

08 Feb, 2019

CNVP’s Executive Director attended a workshop Opportunities for farm diversification in the circular bioeconomy during 6-7 February 2019 in Vilnius, Lithuania.

The event was organised within the framework of the European Innovation Partnership for Agricultural Productivity and Sustainability (EIP-AGRI), organised by the European Commission (DG AGRI) and the EIP-AGRI Service Point. The workshop was hosted by Lithuania’s Ministry of Agriculture.

Some 80 professionals from all over Europe participated in the event, including farmers, foresters, entrepreneurs, SMEs, start-ups, advisory services, universities, research technology organisations and EU rural networks.

The circular economy can be an important source of diversified and stable income for farmers and foresters, as well as a factor for high quality job creation, competitiveness and growth in rural areas. New business opportunities based on modern digital technologies and innovative business practices that make better use of waste streams, including the recovery of nutrients, allow farmers and foresters to make a significant contribution to a more circular and resource-efficient rural economy; for example, by developing new markets for intermediary products and/or joint initiatives with industry, and/or by developing their own particular products.
