During the last three years, CNVP Kosovo has monitored carbon sequestration (CS) and biomass growth on an annual basis on 100 permanent demonstration plots in 11 municipalities, covering 13,151 ha. of which 7,457 ha. is covered by forests.

A workshop was held on 16 May 2019 for stakeholders from: Ministry of Environment and Spatial Planning, Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Rural Development, Kosovo Forestry Agency, Ministry of Economic Development, National Association of Private Forestry Owner, Municipalities and University of Prizren.

During the workshop, CNVP Kosovo presented the measurement of biomass growth and CS in coppice forests in 15 cadastral zones - pioneering work in the country. Knowing that forests play an important role in the global carbon cycle, and that active forest management is vital in efforts to mitigate climate change, creation of the necessary infrastructure for regular monitoring of CS and biomass growth in Kosovo is important.

The workshop identified necessary steps to develop further the road map for biomass growth and CS, including improving the legal framework condition, raising awareness, and training main stakeholders.

The activity was supported through the Sida-funded project Strengthening Sustainable Private and Decentralized Forests that is being implemented by CNVP Kosovo.
