The role of forests in carbon sequestration is related to sustainable forest management. Carbon sequestration and its deposition in biomass is an environmental service provided by forest ecosystems.
CNVP Kosovo in the framework of the implementation of the Project “Strengthening Private and Decentralized Forestry in Kosovo” has prepared a Document on Biomass growth and carbon sequestration in permanently established samples plots, presenting achieved progress of biomass growth and carbon sequestration which was regularly updated with the data and monitoring.
The purpose of setting up permanent sample plots for measuring biomass growth and carbon sequestration is to obtain preliminary results on the capacity of forests, primarily degraded coppice for carbon sequestration through of wood biomass and promotion of state structures or others to determine the country's participation in the global carbon balance.
Based on the results fragmented by the inventory of wood biomass growth and carbon sequestration, good silvotechnical practices are also recommended for the treatment of mainly degraded coppice forests.
The number of the established permanent sample plots is 115 in 12 different municipalities of Kosovo, respectively: 16 Cadastral Zones, in forests with a different ownership structure.
The activity was supported through the Sida-funded project Strengthening Sustainable Private and Decentralised Forests that is being implemented by CNVP Kosovo.
