In a significant step towards promoting sustainable environmental practices, CNVP Kosovo, today conducted a productive meeting with Mr. Burim Berisha, the mayor of Fushe Kosova municipality, as part of the SUNREED project. The main objective of the meeting was to explore the potential establishment of fast-growing tree plantations along the Sitnica riverbed and discuss forest rehabilitation efforts.

The Sitnica river flows through the municipality of Fushë Kosova, covering a distance of approximately 10 kilometers. However, a considerable portion of this area is in need of urgent rehabilitation. To address this issue, the proposal of planting poplar trees along the riverbed was put forward during the meeting. This initiative holds the promise of enhancing sustainability against floods, promoting biodiversity, and significantly increasing carbon sequestration in the region.

Both CNVP Kosovo and Mr. Berisha agreed to collaborate further to identify priority areas for plantation establishment and establish the plantations of fast growing trees, focusing on poplar hybrids.

Furthermore, discussions extended to explore the potential cooperation on forest rehabilitation and sanitary thinning. These efforts would not only contribute to the overall restoration of the forest ecosystem but also result in the production of biomass for energy purposes.

The project Sustainable Use of Natural Resources for Environment and Economic Development (SUNREED) is funded by the Embassy of Sweden in Kosovo and being implemented by CNVP Kosovo.
