Every March 5th, we mark World Energy Efficiency Day, a reminder that optimizing energy use doesn’t mean sacrificing comfort—it means making smarter choices for a sustainable future.

To highlight real-world solutions, we were joined today by the Swedish Embassy in Prishtina for a field visit to two key energy sites supported by CNVP Kosovo’s SUNREED project.

As part of the visit, the delegation toured the Biomass Collection Point in Gjakova, where CNVP Kosovo, in partnership with Feniks-A, is working to ensure a stable and sustainable supply of raw materials for biomass production, improving forest management while also creating new market opportunities and supporting renewable energy solutions.

Another key visit was to the Biomass District Heating System in Gjakova. This modern facility was developed to replace an outdated, fossil fuel-dependent heating system. It now operates as a combined heat and power plant, utilizing locally sourced biomass to provide clean, affordable heating for Gjakova’s residents. The plant supplies approximately 30% of Gjakova’s heating needs, serving around 2,000 customers and covering about 50% of the city’s population.

This transition to biomass has led to:

- Lower emissions

- Reduced costs

- Sustainable energy for the community

A special thank you to the Swedish Embassy in Prishtina for their continuous support in advancing sustainable energy solutions in Kosovo.
