Workshop on “Opportunities for forest smallholders in Balkan countries to participate in timber markets”

A regional workshop on “Opportunities for forest smallholders in Balkan countries to participate in timber markets” will be held during 16-17 May 2017 in Hotel Mondial, Tirana, Albania.

The purpose of the workshop is to permit greater understanding among forest stakeholders in the Balkans about forest certification and its relation to sustainable forest management, with a specific focus on small-scale forest holders.

The workshop has been organised by the Regional Centre for Forestry and Rural Development (REFORD), with contributions by the FAO Regional Office for Europe and Central Asia (FAO REU), Connecting Natural Values & People Foundation (CNVP), and the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC).

The workshop will review the results of a survey on forest certification implemented in seven Balkan countries by REFORD network members. In addition, representatives from Balkan countries have been invited to comment on forest certification, current trends and developments, as well as obstacles to forestry development in the Balkans and the wider region.
