CNVP Kosovo in cooperation with the Municipality of Junik and the Association of Private Forest Owners in Junik organized the traditional event “Chestnut Day”, which aims to promote the values of natural resources, including chestnut, known before as the "blessed fruit".

The Dukagjini area in Kosovo is rich with chestnut forests with an area of about 3500 ha, but they need regeneration, disease prevention, as well as an organized market to sell chestnut fruits.

In his opening remarks, the mayor of Junik, Ruzhdi Shehu thanked CNVP for supporting organization of the Chestnut Day, which is becoming a cultural tradition of our heritage.

“This year has been fruitful thanks to suitable atmospheric conditions for the growth of chestnut that also affected their high quality and increase in quantity. In this social crisis of rising prices, it would be a help to our families to sell them, but surprisingly the fall of collection points occurred, which reduced competition and this affected the extremely low selling price of chestnuts”, said mayor Shehu.

Over the years, CNVP has supported the Municipality of Junik and other municipalities where chestnuts are grown by organizing trainings, revitalizing existing chestnuts, visits to exchange experiences as well as by demonstrating new plantations with saplings from EU countries.

Through the SUNREED project financed by the Embassy of Sweden in Pristina/Sida, CNVP is trying to promote the values of the chestnut and to contribute in the coordination of relevant actors for supportive policies that would benefit the owners and the community.
